What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Have the TV, the mount, and any soundbar or shelf on site, plus the power and HDMI cables you plan to use. Clear the wall and the floor below it, and know where you want the center of the screen. The first three checks are what the wall is made of, where the studs fall using a finder and a magnet for nails, and what is behind the drywall at the height you picked. We also check for a receptacle nearby and whether the outlet is switched.

The visit

The mount hits studs, or it goes on a listed anchor system for the wall you have. The cord is managed so it is not a loop someone catches. If you want power inside the wall, that is a permitted electrical run with an in-wall rated kit, not a extension cord behind the drywall.

A mount in one stud and an anchor spins when the TV is tilted. We find two studs or we change the mount. Plaster walls get a different fastener plan than new board.

Permit

Hanging a TV on a bracket and plugging it into an existing receptacle normally needs no permit. Running new power inside the wall is electrical work, and many New Jersey towns want a permit and an inspection for it, even when the kit is listed for in-wall use. Low-voltage cables for HDMI or speakers generally do not need one. If you only want the cords concealed in a surface raceway, that is a trim item and no permit is involved. We confirm with the town before the wall opens.

On the Shore

Salt air is hard on this assembly. The lag bolts, the mount plate, and the fasteners inside the bracket rust, and a mount that was tight can loosen as the fastener shanks thin. Humidity and temperature swings through a shore house also work on drywall anchors, and a TV that faces an open slider collects moisture on the boards and in the HDMI ports. We use coated or stainless fasteners at the wall and keep the mount off exterior-grade walls where condensation runs.

When we leave

We hang the mount, set the TV, and then pull down and push up on the bracket with the screen on it to see if anything moves. The tilt and swivel get cycled through their full range. We power it on, confirm the picture on the input you use, and check that the soundbar or the source switches the way you expect. Cable slack gets dressed so nothing is pulling on a port. You get told which breaker or outlet feeds it and where the anchors are.

Built with

For most installs we use a steel fixed or full-motion mount sized to the screen weight, lag bolts into studs, or a listed toggle or masonry anchor where there is no stud. In-wall power uses a listed recessed receptacle kit with a matching inlet, never an extension cord. Cables are in-wall rated HDMI or a low-voltage raceway. A power strip or a surge protector goes at the outlet, and a soundbar gets a bracket rated for its weight.

FAQ

TV Installations questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

Do you hide the wires?

Surface raceway anytime. In-wall power and low voltage only with the right kit and, where the town cares, a permit.

Above a fireplace?

We check the heat and the viewing height. A TV high over a mantel is a neck problem, and we will say if the heat will cook it.

Soundbar?

On the mount or the wall, with a path for its power that is not a second cord across the mantel.

Brick fireplace?

Masonry anchors sized for the brick, not the mortar alone. We do not tapcon into a hollow joint and hope.

What if the studs are not where the TV should be centered?

We use a mount with horizontal play, or we add blocking if the wall is open. We do not hang a TV off-center of the studs with one lag in wood and one in air.

Will you set up the channels?

We hang it and power it. Your accounts and your passwords stay yours.

Can you mount it on a metal stud wall?

Yes, with the right anchors or by adding blocking. Metal studs take a snap toggle or a strap, not a lag bolt. We open a small hole or use the baseboard or an outlet cutout to see what is there first.

Will the TV block my light switch or outlet?

Sometimes, and that is why we lay out the height with tape before drilling. If the bracket lands on a switch or a receptacle, we shift the mount or move the device. A blocked outlet is a daily annoyance you cannot undo.

Do you run the cable to a closet or a cabinet?

We can fish low-voltage cable to a nearby cabinet or a media box if there is a path. A finished wall with fire blocking or insulation can make that hard, and we will say so rather than cut a lot of holes.

What about an outdoor TV on a covered porch?

It has to be a set rated for outdoor use and a mount that will not rust, or it will not last. Salt air and damp reach a covered porch too. We seal the penetrations and keep the connections out of the weather as much as possible.
