What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Know where the chime box is, since it is often painted over and hidden on a hallway wall or above a door. Note whether the button is on wood trim, brick, siding, or a metal storm door frame, and whether the old button ever lit up. If you have a video unit, have it on site with its power requirements. The tech first measures voltage at the transformer, then tests the button and the chime separately, then checks the transformer output against the load the chime or camera actually needs.

The visit

A dead chime is usually the transformer or the button, not the chime itself. We meter the transformer before we replace the sounding board. Video doorbells need enough power. A tired 10VA transformer will reboot the camera every time the solenoid kicks.

The wire in older Monmouth houses is often stapled and broken inside the jamb. We test continuity before we fish a new run, because sometimes the break is two inches from the button.

Permit

A doorbell is low voltage. A permit is normally not required in New Jersey to replace a button, chime, or transformer on the existing wiring. Installing a new transformer at a panel or a receptacle does mean working in a line-voltage box, and adding a circuit or cutting a new device box into a finished wall is the kind of electrical work that gets filed and inspected through the local construction office. The low-voltage side itself stays unpermitted.

On the Shore

Shore houses eat doorbell buttons. Salt air and blown rain pit the button contacts and the terminal screws behind it, and the low current the chime draws is not enough to burn through that film. That is why a button that tests fine in the shop can be dead on the wall by spring. A weather-rated button with a gasket and tinned or sealed terminals at the splice holds up far better than an open-contact button exposed to the weather side of a storm door.

When we leave

The tech presses the button several times, from a step back and from the jamb, and listens for the chime through a full cycle. A mechanical chime gets a check that the plunger seats and the tone bars ring clean. A hardwired camera gets booted and confirmed on power, and the tech stays until it holds instead of rebooting. Then the button seating, the gasket, and the chime cover go back on, and the transformer is labeled at the panel.

Built with

The usual parts are 18-gauge low-voltage bell wire, a step-down transformer sized to the load, a mechanical or electronic chime, and a button rated for exterior use. Sealed or tinned terminals resist corrosion at the button. A hardwired video unit needs a transformer with enough capacity to hold the camera up when the chime fires. Wire nuts and splices in a damp jamb get replaced with proper low-voltage connectors rather than twisted and taped joints.

FAQ

Doorbell Installation and Repairs questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

Can you power a video doorbell on the old wires?

If the transformer is sized for it and the wire is intact. Otherwise we replace the transformer, which is usually in a closet, the attic, or on the panel.

The button works, the chime does not.

We check the plunger and the transformer voltage at the chime. A painted-shut plunger is a five-minute fix.

Do you install a wireless chime?

Yes, when a wire run is unreasonable. Wired is quieter and does not eat batteries, and we say which one the house can take.

Two buttons, one chime?

Front and back can share a chime if the chime is a two-note unit and the wires are actually two pairs. We test before we promise two sounds.

Will you patch the old button hole?

If we move the button, yes. The new location gets a proper box or a low-voltage mount, not a hole in the siding.

Does a camera doorbell need the internet?

The chime function does not. The phone alerts do. We mount and power it. Your network password stays with you.

Can the chime go somewhere else on the wall?

Yes, if the wire can be fished through the cavity or run through a basement or attic. We confirm there is a reachable path before promising a new location, because a chime mounted on a reverse board or a masonry wall is a different job.

My button lights up but nothing rings. What does that mean?

The lit button proves power reaches the button, so the break is downstream. It is usually the chime plunger, a corroded chime terminal, or a transformer that sags under load. We meter each in turn instead of guessing.

Does a wireless chime need new batteries often?

It depends on how often the button is pressed and how cold the spot gets. A wireless setup is the right answer when a wire run is unreasonable. We say which style the house can actually take before anything is mounted.

Will the old button hole show after the swap?

If the new button is larger, it covers the old hole and the paint ring. If it is smaller or moves a few inches, we patch and touch up the trim, or we set a proper low-voltage mount so the new hardware sits flat.
