What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the path from the door to the opening and empty the cabinet under the sink before the visit. Have the model number, the manual, and any cord, whip, or hose kit that came in the box set aside. Pull the old unit out far enough to see the floor behind it if you can. We look first at the shutoff valve under the sink for the hot supply, the drain connection point at the disposal or the wye, and the receptacle or hardwire junction behind the unit. Then we measure the opening against the machine.

The visit

A dishwasher visit starts at the shutoffs, not at the kickplate. We check that the hot supply is actually hot, that the drain loop is high enough to stop a sink backup from entering the tub, and that the unit is level so the door does not walk open. Laundry hookups get a new pair of hoses if the ones on the floor are the original rubber.

The failure we see in 1990s Ocean Township kitchens is a plastic drain hose shoved into a disposal without the knockout removed, or a supply valve that crumbles when we turn it. We replace the valve before we slide the machine in, not after it leaks on the new floor.

Permit

Replacing a dishwasher, disposal, or laundry pair on existing connections normally needs no permit in New Jersey. Work stays in the same footprint and does not alter the drain or the circuit. If we extend a circuit, add a new receptacle, or relocate a drain or vent, that is electrical or plumbing work that does fall under a permit, and we say so before anything is opened. We do not guess at what your town wants; we ask.

On the Shore

Shore humidity is hard on the parts nobody sees. The steel cabinet base of a machine in a damp garage or a first-floor laundry rusts from the floor up, and rubber supply hoses go brittle and start weeping at the ferrule long before they burst. Braided stainless hoses and a metal-braided drain line hold up better here. We want the dryer vent short, clean, and dampered so it is not pulling damp outdoor air back in.

When we leave

Every unit gets run before we pack up. The dishwasher gets a full cycle with the door watched for leaks at the supply, the drain loop, and the disposal connection. A washer gets a fill and a spin in both directions. A disposal gets water and a load of ice, and we check that the knockout is out and the trap is not dripping. We dry the floor, confirm the unit is level, and leave the shutoffs open and the machine in place.

Built with

Braided stainless supply hoses with a burst rating, a new drain hose with a high loop or an air gap where the code calls for one, and a cord or a flexible whip sized to the unit. We use a new shutoff valve when the old one is stiff or weeping, a fresh P-trap or tailpiece gasket, and stainless clamps instead of the crimped band that came in the box. Small parts are where the callbacks live.

FAQ

Appliance Installation questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

Do you hook up a dishwasher someone else delivered?

Yes, after we confirm the opening, the cord or whip, and the shutoffs. If the opening is short, we say so before the machine is uncrated.

What about a gas range?

We set and level it. The gas connection is a separate step with a leak test, and we do not leave a flexible connector kinked against the back wall.

Will you haul the old dishwasher?

Yes. It does not stay in the driveway.

Why does a new washer walk?

The feet are not down or the floor is out of level. We set the feet and check the pan drain if the laundry is on the second floor.

Do you install over-the-range microwaves?

Yes, into a fan-rated setup with the duct actually connected. A recirculating kit is a different install from a vented one, and we do not mix them.

What usually breaks on the first run?

A supply that was never opened, or a drain hose that wasn't clamped. We run a cycle before we leave.

Do you need the manual for the machine?

It helps. The manual gives the clearance to the sides and the top, the drain height, and whether the unit can sit on a hardwire or needs a plug. If you do not have it, we look up the model and measure the opening ourselves.

Can you install a machine on a floor that is not level?

Within reason. We set the feet and shim the cabinet so it does not rock. A floor out beyond what the feet can take means the machine will still walk. A second-floor washer may need a pan.

My old disposal hums but will not turn. Is that a new unit?

Not always. That is often a jammed flywheel or a tripped reset button on the bottom. We try the reset and the hex wrench first. If the motor is burnt or the housing is leaking, it gets replaced, and the flange and the drain lines come with it.

Will the new dishwasher fit the old cabinet opening?

We measure the opening, the depth, and the height under the counter before the machine is uncrated. Standard openings are forgiving, but a short opening under a thick countertop means the machine cannot slide in, and that is better to learn before the packaging is off.
