Light Switches

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the wall in front of the switch and move anything breakable off a nearby table, because faceplates and devices come off and screws get dropped. Know which breaker kills that circuit, or leave the panel door closed and let the tech find it. If the switch is warm, buzzing, or has scorched plastic, say so before anything is touched. On arrival the tech confirms the breaker is off with a tester, not the handle position, pulls the plate to see whether the box is metal or plastic and how deep it sits, and checks whether a neutral is present before promising a dimmer or a smart device.

The visit

A switch that sparks or feels warm gets the breaker off before the plate comes off. We wrap conductors on the screws instead of reusing a backstab, and we match a dimmer to the lamps on that circuit so it does not buzz or drop out LEDs.

Three-ways in older houses fail because a previous swap put the common on a traveler. We meter it. Guessing from the red wire is how the second switch gets burned up.

Permit

Replacing a switch, dimmer, or receptacle in an existing box is a device swap in New Jersey and normally needs no permit. A permit is normally not required when no new cable is run and no new circuit is created. Adding a switch where there was none, cutting a new box into a finished wall, or running a new circuit is electrical work that gets filed and inspected through the local construction office. Ask and it gets settled before the work starts.

On the Shore

Salt air does not care that a switch is indoors. On the barrier islands and within a few blocks of the water, airborne salt rides the humidity into wall cavities and corrodes switch contacts, screw terminals, and the steel yokes behind the plate. Corroded contacts run warm and pit, which is why a switch near the coast can fail long before its rated switching life. Devices with plated or sealed contacts and tight, wrapped terminations hold up better than ordinary builder-grade toggles.

When we leave

Every circuit the tech touched gets energized and checked with the lamps on. A three-way gets flipped from both ends, a four-way gets cycled through each position, and a dimmer gets run from full low to full high to confirm no flicker, buzz, or drop-out. The tech checks that the plate sits flat, that a multi-gang plate is not pinched, and that the device sits square in the box. Dimmer bodies run warm in the wall, which is normal. Screwless plates should be snugged again after a week.

Built with

The usual parts are 15-amp and 20-amp toggle or decorator switches, three-way and four-way switches for stairs and hallways, and dimmers rated for the load and the lamp type. Devices are matched to the wire size already in the box and to the box fill, since a deep dimmer body needs room. Connections are made on the side screws with pigtails rather than push-in backstabs. Unbreakable nylon plates replace painted or cracked plates.

FAQ

Light Switches questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

Can you swap a switch for a dimmer?

If the box has a neutral where the dimmer needs one, and the load is dimmable. A motor load is not a lamp dimmer.

The switch works only sometimes.

That is usually a loose backstab or a worn toggle. We replace the device and pigtail the wires.

Do you do smart switches?

When the box has a neutral. We do not bootleg a neutral off the ground.

A switch that controls an outlet?

Common in bedrooms. We can split it back to always-hot if that is what you want, and we label it.

GFCI that will not reset?

We find what is downstream. Replacing the GFCI without clearing the fault just trips the new one.

Do you replace the plate?

Yes. A painted-over plate from 1985 does not go back on a new device.

Why did my dimmer stop working after a bulb change?

Most LED dimmers are matched to the lamp type. A non-dimmable LED or a different driver will flicker, buzz, or drop out at the low end. We check the dimmer rating against the new lamps before replacing the device.

Can you move a switch six feet down the wall?

Yes, when the cable can be fished through the cavity without cutting the wall open. If blocking, insulation, or a firestop is in the way, we stop and tell you what patching the new location will involve.

Two switches in one box feel loose. Can that be fixed?

A loose device is usually a broken plaster ear or an over-cut box, not the switch itself. We reset the device against the box and pack the gap behind the ears so the plate stops rocking when someone presses it.

Why does the switch feel warm to the touch?

A dimmer body runs warm, and warm is normal. A plain toggle that feels hot is a different problem, usually a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. That one gets opened and checked the same day.
