What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Have the make and model of both the thermostat and the furnace or air handler, and decide what schedule you actually want before the visit: wake, away, home, sleep. Clear access to the air handler and the breaker panel. The technician checks the wiring behind the wall plate first, whether a C-wire is present, whether Rc and Rh are jumpered, and what each conductor connects to at the other end. Then the transformer output, then the equipment configuration, since a heat pump with aux heat is wired differently from a straight furnace.

The visit

A thermostat and controls visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For thermostat and controls, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

A thermostat swap is not a permit job in New Jersey, and neither is low-voltage control wiring. It is a component change on an existing circuit. A permit enters only if new line-voltage wiring is run to the unit, or if the control work is part of a permitted equipment replacement. What matters on a thermostat is the commissioning: equipment type, staging, and cycle rate all have to be set, or a new control will short cycle a system that was running fine.

On the Shore

A Shore house has two things working against a thermostat: humidity and a second floor that runs hotter than the first. A control that reads temperature only will run the system to a number and leave the house damp, and one mounted on an exterior wall or in a hallway near a return reads the wall, not the room. Salt air is not the indoor issue; the issue is a control that cannot ask the equipment to dehumidify or run the blower low. Placement and setup outweigh the model.

When we leave

The handover is a full cycle in both modes. The technician runs heat until the unit stages and the blower comes on, then cooling until the compressor runs and the supply is cold, and confirms the schedule holds through a setpoint change. Fan-only, aux or emergency heat, and battery or C-wire draw all get tested. You get the schedule written down and the manual. The care note: do not paint over the sensor slots or set anything warm against the unit.

Built with

The thermostat is a low-voltage programmable or smart unit matched to the equipment: single stage, multi-stage, or heat pump with aux. Wire is 18-gauge thermostat cable, and a C-wire is pulled from a spare conductor or run new where constant power is needed. A wall plate or a small patch covers the old footprint. Batteries are the correct cell for the model, and a surge protector at the air handler protects the control board.

FAQ

Thermostat and Controls questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Thermostat and Controls is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

My new thermostat needs a C-wire and I do not have one. What now?

A spare conductor in the existing cable can be used if there is one. If not, an adapter at the air handler or a new cable run solves it. Running without constant power is not the answer.

Why does my thermostat read a different temperature than my thermometer?

It reads at the wall plate, and the wall can be warmer or colder than the room, especially near a return or in sun. Placement and a remote sensor fix it; a new unit in the same spot will not.

Can I keep my thermostat when the system is replaced?

Sometimes, if it supports the new equipment's stages and refrigerant. A control that cannot run the new staging will hold the system back, so it is worth checking before the swap.

Should I set the fan to on or auto?

Auto runs the blower with the equipment and keeps humidity lower. On runs it continuously for filtering and air mixing, at the expense of fan energy and some moisture being re-evaporated.
