We inspect the cause, check what else it touched, and leave a written scope with materials and timing. The visit is free and there is no obligation to book the work.

Stair Treads, Risers, and Nosings

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the staircase completely and take down anything hanging over it, then note which step creaks or feels soft underfoot. If the stairs are open underneath, say so, since the framing below will be looked at. Three checks come before material is cut. Every tread and riser is measured individually, because stairs in an older house are rarely uniform. The nosing overhang and the thickness of the finish material are checked, since a thicker tread changes the first step. The handrail is pulled on to see how it is anchored.

The visit

A stair treads, risers, and nosings visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For stair treads, risers, and nosings, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Replacing treads and risers or cladding an existing staircase in New Jersey does not normally require a permit, since retreading covers the existing structure rather than rebuilding it. The work becomes permitted when stringers or framing are cut or replaced, when the stair layout changes, or when a railing is rebuilt. That is discussed before anything is removed.

On the Shore

Stairs take more of this climate than the floor does, especially a staircase open underneath or set against an exterior wall. Damp air moves through the open underside, so treads cup, nosings lift at the front edge, and riser joints open. That edge catches a shoe and starts to splinter. Freeze-thaw on an exterior stair lifts treads and rusts fasteners, which favors a stable tread material, adhesive at every tread, and sealed cut ends.

When we leave

Every step is walked from bottom to top, checking for rock, movement, and noise, and tread heights are compared from the first step to the last so no step is out of rhythm. Nosings are pressed at the front edge to confirm they are solid, and the handrail is pulled to make sure it holds. Fastener heads are checked for being set and filled. The care note covers cure time before heavy use.

Built with

Treads are solid hardwood, or an engineered tread where movement is a concern, in a species and finish matched to the floor at the bottom of the stairs. Nosings are bullnose pieces cut from the same material so the profile matches the tread. Risers are paint-grade or matched material, set with construction adhesive as well as fasteners so nothing squeaks, and color-matched filler handles touch-up.

FAQ

Stair Treads, Risers, and Nosings questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Stair Treads, Risers, and Nosings is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Can you reface the stairs instead of rebuilding them?

Retreading and new risers are exactly that. The existing stringers stay in place and the finish material goes over them, which is far less work than a rebuild. If the framing turns out to be failing, that is shown first.

Will the new treads make the first step taller?

Adding thickness on top of the existing tread raises every step, including the first one, so the change is measured before material is cut. It is usually small enough to be fine, though the bottom step and headroom are checked.

How do you handle the creaking?

Creaks come from movement between the tread and the framing, so the fix is construction adhesive along the contact points plus fasteners that pull the tread down tight. A shim handles an uneven gap. The step is walked afterward to confirm it is quiet.

Can the stairs be stained to match the floor below?

Treads are stained and finished to match, using a sample of the floor finish to pick the tone. Stairs wear faster than a floor, so the topcoat matters. A test on an offcut is shown first.
