Backsplashes, on one written scope.
Tile backsplashes set on a flat wall, with outlets cut so the plates sit flush.

What’s included on a backsplashes visit.
We inspect the cause, check what else it touched, and leave a written scope with materials and timing. The visit is free and there is no obligation to book the work.
What to know before the visit.
Have ready
Clear the counter completely, including the small appliance you use every day, and take the outlet and switch plates off if you want to keep them. Tell us if the wall is plaster, tile, or greenboard, because that changes the prep. Before any tile is set we check three things: the flatness of the wall with a straightedge, the depth of the electrical boxes against the finished tile face, and whether the counter is level at the back edge. A low spot behind a large tile is a lippage problem later.
- Layout that avoids slivers
- Outlet extensions
- Sealed edges at the counter
- Grout that matches the stone
The visit
Layout starts at the center of the sink or the range, not at the corner of the wall, so you do not get a sliver next to the faucet. Outlets get box extenders so the plate sits on the tile instead of floating in front of it. We seal the counter joint with a color-matched caulk, not grout, because that joint moves.
The usual failure is tile set on a wavy plaster wall in an older Red Bank or Ocean Grove kitchen. Large tile lippage shows every ridge. We skim the wall flat before the first tile goes up.
Permit
Tiling a backsplash on an existing wall normally does not require a permit in New Jersey. Adding a receptacle, moving a box, or running a new circuit for an under-cabinet light does require electrical work and, in most towns, an electrical permit with an inspection. If the plan touches wiring, we handle it as an electrical step in its own right. Tiling over a wall with no electrical change is a finish scope.
On the Shore
Kitchen walls in this region fight moisture from both sides. Shore humidity and cooking steam work into a plaster or greenboard wall, and a backsplash that is grouted hard at the counter joint cracks as the framing moves with the seasons. We use a flexible sealant at the counter, not grout, and we set tile with a modified thinset that tolerates a little movement. Behind a range, the wall sees heat as well as steam, so a heat-tolerant adhesive matters there.
When we leave
When the tile is set and the grout has hazed, we wipe it down, buff it, and reinstate every outlet and switch with a box extender so the plate sits flat against the tile rather than rocking on it. The counter joint gets a bead of color-matched sealant and a finger-tooled edge. We run the disposal and the faucet to confirm nothing weeps. Grout needs the rest of the day and the caulk needs overnight before the counter goes back into normal use.
Built with
Modified thinset for the bond, a white version under glass and light stone so the color does not read through. Grout is sanded or unsanded to match the joint width. At the counter and any inside corner we use a flexible, color-matched sealant rather than grout. Box extenders bring the devices out to the new surface, and a notched trowel matched to the tile size keeps the coverage even. A backer board or a skim coat flattens a wavy wall before tile.
Can you tile around a window backsplash?
Yes. The cuts are planned so the sill pieces are equal, and the corner joints are caulked rather than grouted hard.
Do you remove the old tile?
If it is loose or the wall behind it is soft, yes. Thinset over a bouncing sheet of old tile fails at the grout lines.
What about outlets in the middle of a tile?
We extend the box and cut the tile so the plate covers the cut. A plate that rocks means the box is still recessed.
Glass tile or ceramic?
Glass needs a white thinset or the color shows through. We do not use the same gray mortar we use on porcelain.
How long before I can put the toaster back?
After the grout has set, usually the next day. The caulk at the counter needs the same night to skin over.
Will you move the switch if it lands on a grout line?
We can shift a device in the box a little. Moving the box itself is an electrical visit, and we will tell you before we tile over a bad location.
Do you have to remove the old backsplash first?
If it is coming off in sheets or the wall behind it is soft, yes. Tile set over loose tile moves and the grout cracks. If the old tile is well bonded and flat, we can sometimes go over it, and we tell you which one your wall needs.
Can you match tile I already have?
Sometimes. If you have leftover tile and grout, that is the clean answer. If you do not, we can match the size and the tone as closely as the current market allows, but dye lots differ, so a patch can read as a patch in raking light.
Will you cut tile around my existing outlets?
Yes. We shut the circuit off, cut the tile to the box, and bring the box out to the finished surface with an extender. A plate that floats in front of the tile or rocks on it means the box stayed recessed.
What goes behind the range?
A small-format tile or a slab, set with an adhesive rated for heat, and a joint that can take the expansion. We keep the pattern readable around the hood and the outlets. If the range is a slide-in, the side trim needs to land flat against the tile.
