What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Empty the closet completely, including the floor, so the full opening can be measured and the drill can reach. If the child is old enough, have them show which side they hang on and whether they use bins. The technician checks three things first: the inside width and depth at several heights, because the closet is rarely square, the location of the studs in the side and back walls, and the door swing and hinge side. Rod height and shelf depth get set from those numbers, not from a catalog drawing.

The visit

Rod heights are set for the child who uses them now, with a second rod that can stay when they grow. Shelves are fixed into the side walls or standards that are screwed to studs, not a tension kit that collapses when the bin gets heavy.

The usual leftover from a builder closet is a single rod at adult height and a shelf nobody can reach. We use the full height, including the slope under a stair, which is where kids' rooms in split-levels hide their storage.

Permit

Closet carpentry is finish work on an existing room, so a municipality does not permit it and nothing is inspected. Two adjacent scopes do. A new circuit for a closet light is electrical work and is inspected, which is why the technician will not tie a fixture into an unknown circuit. Water damage behind the drywall is a repair and sometimes a restoration claim. Neither is part of a shelf and rod install.

On the Shore

Shore humidity is hard on anything made of particleboard. A closet on an exterior wall stays damp, and the board swells along the cut edges first, then the shelf sags and the coating lifts. Solid wood or plywood holds up far better. Salt air also attacks plain steel brackets and rod ends, so coated or stainless hardware lasts longer. The technician seals cut edges and leaves a small gap at the wall so the shelf can move with the season instead of binding.

When we leave

Before leaving, the technician loads the rods and shelf by hand to check for flex, opens and closes the doors through their full swing, and confirms the rod brackets are snug and the shelf is level. Edge banding and paint are checked for anything that needs a second pass. The care note is about weight: bins go on the shelf over a standard, and heavy boxes stay low. If a rod was set for a younger child, the second height is left marked so it can be moved later.

Built with

The materials are solid wood or plywood shelves, wood or metal closet rods with matching flanges, metal standards and brackets for adjustability, and cabinet-grade plywood when a built-in is wanted. Edge banding or a wood face covers the plywood core so the cut edge is not exposed to damp air. Fasteners are coated or stainless. The shelf depth is chosen to the job: twelve inches for hanging clothes, fourteen to sixteen for bins. The wrong depth means the doors hit the bins.

FAQ

Kids Closets questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

Do you build it in place?

Yes. Pre-built towers that do not fit the closet get sent back. We measure the opening, including the hinge swing.

Wire or wood shelves?

Wood or a heavy standard if you want it to hold bins. Wire is fine for light clothes and we will not pretend it holds a row of board games.

Can you add doors?

If the opening allows a pair of doors that clear the rod. A bifold on a bad track is worse than a curtain, and we fix the track or we do not hang it.

What about a closet with no light?

We can add a surface LED on the existing switch leg if the box is there. A new switch is an electrical visit.

Will it match the room trim?

We can paint the new wood to the room. Raw pine in a painted closet looks unfinished, so we prime it.

Do you remove the old wire kit?

Yes, and we patch the holes the clips leave so the new shelf does not sit on craters.

Can you use the space under a sloped ceiling?

Yes, and that is often the best storage in the room. The low end gets drawers or open bins and the tall end keeps a full rod. The shelf follows the slope instead of leaving a dead triangle.

What is the right rod height for a child?

Low enough that they can reach the rod without a stool, with a second rod higher for when they grow. The bottom rod stays for pants or short items so the top one does not get overloaded. Heights are marked on the wall.

Will the shelves hold plastic storage bins?

If they are fastened to studs or on standards, yes. Wire shelving is where bins become a problem, because the wire digs in and the clips pull. The fastener is matched to what is going on the shelf, not to a standard spacing.

Can you work around a closet that has a sloped or uneven floor?

Yes. The uprights are set plumb and the shelf is leveled, so the gap at the floor takes up the difference. A shelf set parallel to a sloping floor looks crooked even when the installation is solid.
