Cabinets

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Empty the cabinets on the runs we are working on and set the contents somewhere the doors cannot reach. Have the appliance model numbers on hand if the cabinets surround a range, a fridge, or a hood. We check three things first: the level of the floor along the wall, the plumb and the straightness of the wall itself, and the high spots on the studs behind the cabinets. A wall that bows means fillers and scribes, and we plan them before a single box goes up.

The visit

We start by finding what is out of level: the floor, the wall, or both. Fillers and scribes hide the gap. Doors get adjusted at the hinge, not padded with cardboard. Soft-close hinges and slides are a hardware swap on boxes that are still square.

The failure in a 20-year-old kitchen is a hinge plate that pulled out of particle board, or a sink base whose floor is swollen from a supply leak. We do not rehang a door on a crumbled stile. The stile gets repaired or the box gets replaced.

Permit

Hanging or adjusting cabinets in New Jersey normally requires no permit. Replacing doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and slides is a finish scope. A permit becomes relevant when the work changes the structure, moves plumbing or gas for a range, or adds a circuit for a new appliance, and the electrical or plumbing inspector is the one who signs that off. Basic cabinet installation on existing walls is not a permitted scope.

On the Shore

Shore kitchens live with humidity that swells particle-board boxes and works the hinge screws loose season after season. A sink base is the first to go, because a slow supply weep or a splash over the rim swells the floor of the box and the doors stop closing square. We look for water damage at the sink base, behind the dishwasher, and under the fridge line. Solid plywood boxes and a sealed sink base hold up better here than the particle board common in older kitchens.

When we leave

We do not hand over until every door and drawer has been worked. Each door gets opened and closed and set at the hinge so the reveal is even top to bottom. Each drawer gets pulled full travel and pushed closed to confirm the soft-close engages. We check the fillers and the crown for tight joints, look under the sink for a dry cabinet floor, and confirm the appliance openings match the appliances. You get a handover walkthrough of the adjustments.

Built with

Cabinet runs go into studs with construction screws, plus a ledger or blocking where the studs do not fall at the cabinet line. Fillers and scribes close the gaps to the wall and the ceiling, and a scribe strip is what lets an end panel sit against a floor that dips in the middle. Hinges and slides are the hardware that matters, and we match the plate pattern and the overlay to the existing boxes. Shims are hardwood, not cardboard.

FAQ

Cabinets questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

Can you reface instead of replace?

If the boxes are solid and square, we can replace doors and drawer fronts and paint or veneer the frames. A swollen sink base is not a reface.

Do you install cabinets someone else ordered?

Yes, after we check them against the wall. A 3-inch filler that was supposed to be 1 inch is a layout problem we solve before we screw anything to the studs.

What do you fasten to?

Studs, with a ledger or blocks where the studs do not land. Drywall anchors are not a cabinet fastening.

Will you cut a toe-kick for the floor?

We scribe the kick and the end panels to the floor you have, including the dip in the middle of an old kitchen.

Can you add a pull-out in an existing cabinet?

If the box is square and deep enough for the slide, yes. A twisted box eats the slide.

Do you haul the old cabinets?

If we are replacing them, yes. If we are adjusting them, they stay.

Can you make my existing doors soft-close?

Yes, if the boxes and the hinge plates are sound. It is a hardware swap at the hinge and the slide rather than a new cabinet. We check the plate pattern first, because an old cabinet may not take a modern clip without a small modification to the stile.

The doors rub the frame in summer and clear in winter. Why?

That is humidity moving the box and the door. Particle board swells in the damp months and the hinge screws have less bite. We can adjust the hinges, repair the screw holes with a proper filler, and add a dehumidifier note if the room stays damp.

Do you level the boxes or just screw them to the wall?

Both, in the right order. We find the highest point of the floor, set the first box off that, and shim the rest up to it. Screwing a twisted box tight to a wavy wall pulls the doors out of alignment, and the hinges cannot take that out.

Can you cut a cabinet for a taller fridge or a range hood?

We can modify a box, cut a filler, and refit the opening, provided the frame and the adjacent boxes stay supported. If the cut removes a structural part of the box or the run, the honest answer is a new box rather than a modification that sags.
