What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Empty the room completely, including closets, and pull out the old carpet or flooring if it is coming up. Get the boxes of new flooring inside and open so the boards can acclimate. Three checks come before anything is nailed or sanded. The boards and the subfloor each get a moisture reading on the same scale, because the gap between them decides how the floor moves afterward. The subfloor is walked and probed for soft spots and high seams. Then the slab or framing below is read for damp.

The visit

A hardwood installation and refinishing visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For hardwood installation and refinishing, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Laying a new wood floor over an existing subfloor in New Jersey does not normally require a permit, whether it is nail-down, staple-down, or floating. Sanding and refinishing a floor that is already there is the same. A permit usually enters the picture when the subfloor or the framing under it is replaced in a way that touches structure.

On the Shore

Humidity is the whole story for wood floors near the water. Boards take on moisture in summer and give it back in winter, so a floor installed over a wet slab cups and a floor pinned tight against the walls buckles. Salt air dulls a finish faster and rusts plain fasteners seated in the wood. A slab or basement calls for an engineered board, a vapor retarder, and a gap at every wall.

When we leave

The floor is walked in a grid to find squeaks, and low spots are checked with a straightedge laid across the room. Squeaks are shimmed or face-nailed before the finish hardens. On a new installation, board ends and staggered joints are looked over and the gap at the baseboard is confirmed. On a refinish, the sheen is checked for dull patches under light. You get a care note on foot traffic and furniture pads.

Built with

Solid strip or plank goes above grade over plywood, and an engineered board with a plywood core goes over a slab or a basement where it will not move as much. Boards arrive unfinished when the floor is sanded and finished in place, or prefinished when jobsite dust is a concern. Fasteners are cleats or staples sized to the board, set through a paper or felt underlayment, with a poly vapor retarder over concrete.

FAQ

Hardwood Installation and Refinishing questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Hardwood Installation and Refinishing is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Do the boards need to sit in the house before installation?

Yes, they acclimate in the room where they will be laid so they reach the moisture level of the space. The period depends on the board and the indoor conditions. Laying too early is how you get gaps later.

Can you match new boards to an existing floor?

An existing floor can be sampled and a species, width, and grade matched closely, then the new boards are blended in. Old wood darkens with age and sun, so a perfect match is not guaranteed. A sample is laid in place first.

How many times can my floor be sanded?

Solid wood can take several sandings over its life, because each one removes a thin layer and thickness remains underneath. Engineered boards have a thinner wear layer, so once or twice at most. Remaining thickness is checked before sanding starts.

What about the dust from sanding?

Sanding runs with dust collection, and openings to the rest of the house are sealed, which keeps most dust out of other rooms. Fine dust still settles near the work, so a wipe-down is part of finishing up.
