Trim Wrap and Corner Boards

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the beds along the corner or window you are worried about, because the rot almost always starts down where the trim meets soil and mulch. If you have already poked at a soft spot, say where. The technician probes the wood behind the trim with an awl, starting at the bottom six inches, checks the clearance between the trim and grade, checks how water leaves the roof above and where it lands, and checks the corner fasteners for corrosion.

The visit

A trim wrap and corner boards visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For trim wrap and corner boards, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Wrapping trim in aluminum coil or replacing wood trim with a PVC board is a finish repair, and it normally does not require a building permit in New Jersey. The exception is when the trim work is part of a larger job that is already permitted, such as an addition or a re-side. On its own, replacing rotted trim is maintenance, and you will be told plainly when that is all it is.

On the Shore

The failure on a corner board almost always starts at the bottom, where salt spray, splash, and constant damp keep the wood wet, and it works up from there. Wrapping over soft wood traps that moisture and speeds the rot, which is why the wood behind the trim gets probed before anything is covered. Freeze-thaw splits the trim where water sat in a joint, and salty air corrodes the fasteners holding it.

When we leave

The technician checks the new trim with a straightedge for alignment at the corners, checks the caulk line at the top where water enters, leaves the bottom open so the assembly can drain, and runs water at the top to see it exit below rather than behind the board. The care note covers keeping mulch and soil below the trim and letting the caulk cure before the wall is washed or painted.

Built with

Trim is usually replaced with PVC board or wrapped in aluminum coil stock, both chosen because they do not rot and do not feed moisture into the wall. Cut ends on PVC and any exposed wood get primed. Fasteners are stainless or hot-dipped ring shank. The details that matter are the same either way: a drip edge or flashing at the top, backer rod and urethane caulk at the joints, and nothing caulked at the bottom that would trap water.

FAQ

Trim Wrap and Corner Boards questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Trim Wrap and Corner Boards is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Can you wrap over the existing wood instead of replacing it?

Only if the wood behind is sound and dry. Wrapping soft or damp wood seals the moisture in, and the rot keeps going under a surface that looks fine. If rot is found, that section gets cut out and replaced first, then wrapped or replaced with PVC.

Why is only the bottom of our corner board rotten?

That is where the board meets the ground, where it takes splash and stays wet longest, and where end grain pulls water upward. Keeping soil and mulch clear of the trim and keeping a finish on the bottom few inches is what slows it down.

Does PVC trim need to be painted?

It does not need paint to survive, but it does need it for appearance if the rest of the trim is painted. Most PVC comes with a surface that holds paint well. Left bare, it will look slightly different from the painted wood around it.

How do you keep water from getting behind the trim?

Water gets in at the top, so that is where the flashing or drip edge goes, letting it shed over the trim instead of behind it. The bottom stays open to drain. Caulking the top and leaving the bottom clear is the opposite of what many quick repairs do.
