Window and Door Trim Replacement

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the floor and the sill inside, and take down blinds or curtains on that window, because the repair is checked from both sides. If the window sticks, or if the drywall under it has a stain, say so before the visit. The technician probes the sill and the bottom corners of the surround first, since rot starts where the water sits, then checks the flashing above the head trim, then the gap and reveal between the trim and the window frame.

The visit

A window and door trim replacement visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For window and door trim replacement, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Replacing the trim around an existing window or door is repair work, and it normally does not require a building permit in New Jersey. If the window unit itself is being replaced, that is a different scope and is usually permitted, with the flashing inspected as part of it. Trimming out an existing opening leaves the window where it is, so the permit question generally does not come up.

On the Shore

The bottom of a window surround takes everything: rain running down the wall, splash, and salt spray, and it stays wet longer than the rest of the trim. The end grain at the sill wicks that water up into the board, the caulk joint at the head dries and cracks, and water gets behind the trim and into the sheathing. Freeze-thaw then lifts the paint and opens the joint. That is why the sill gets a slope and a drip edge, and the head gets flashing rather than caulk.

When we leave

Before leaving, the technician opens and closes the window or door to confirm the trim did not bind the frame, checks the caulk line at the head and the sill for a clean, continuous bead, and runs water at the head to watch it pass over the trim and off the sill. The interior wall is checked for any sign of a leak. The care note covers caulk and paint cure time, and the fact that new trim often takes a second coat.

Built with

Trim is PVC or pre-primed finger-jointed material, both chosen because they do not rot and hold paint at the bottom of a window. Where the wall is stain-grade, cedar is used instead, with the end grain primed. The head gets a metal drip cap or butyl flashing tape, the sill gets a sloped nose with a drip, the joints get backer rod and urethane caulk, and the nails are stainless finish nails.

FAQ

Window and Door Trim Replacement questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Window and Door Trim Replacement is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Does the whole window have to come out?

No, unless the frame itself is rotted or the unit has failed. Trimming out the opening means the window stays in place and only the surround is rebuilt. The frame and the sill get checked while the trim is off, so you know if the window is the next thing.

Will the new trim match what we have?

Common profiles are matched from what is on the wall, and you will see the sample held against the existing trim. If the profile is no longer made, a close match can be built up. Paint hides small differences better than stain does.

Do you paint or stain the new trim?

The trim is typically installed primed, and the finish coat is either part of the job or left for a painter, depending on the scope. You will be told which. Back-priming the cut ends happens either way, because that is what keeps the bottom of the trim from wicking water.

Why does the wood under our window keep rotting?

Water runs down the wall, gets behind the head trim, and sits on the sill where there is no slope or drip to shed it. Replacing the wood without adding the flashing and the drip just resets the clock. The repair has to send the water back out.
