Shower Valve Replacement

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Decide whether you want the same trim or a new one, and have the new valve and trim on site if you bought it. Empty the tub or the shower floor and clear the closet or the room behind the wall if we may need to open it. The first three checks are the brand and model of the existing valve, the wall construction and whether there is access from the back, and the condition of the tile or the surround around the handle. We also check the rough-in depth of the valve body and the tub spout or shower arm.

The visit

A shower valve replacement visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For shower valve replacement, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Swapping a shower valve body or a cartridge in the same location is usually treated as a repair, and most New Jersey towns do not require a permit for it. A permit is normally required when the valve is moved, when the drain or the supply lines are relocated, or when the work is part of a bathroom remodel already under permit. Tiling and the wall repair are finish work. If the town wants a permit, we pull it.

On the Shore

A shower valve lives in the wettest wall in the house, and on the Shore that wall is also the coldest in winter. The valve body and the drop ells sit against exterior sheathing, so the cold side sweats and the copper or brass pits from the outside. Freeze-thaw in a house that is closed for the season cracks the body or pushes a solder joint. Hard water eats the cartridge seals, so the handle stops holding temperature. The opening gets insulated and air sealed when we close it.

When we leave

The valve is pressure tested before the wall is closed. We put the handle through hot, cold, and the mixed positions and hold it at each stop, then check the body and the connections through the access opening for any weep. The showerhead and the tub spout are run at full flow. If the wall is open, it stays open until we are sure. You get told how the cartridge comes out for the next time, and where the access panel is.

Built with

We use a pressure-balance or thermostatic valve body with a matching trim kit, a cartridge in ceramic or a composite, and brass or lead-free connections. The wall gets a remodel plate or an access panel so the next service does not mean cutting tile. Fittings are brass, not galvanized, and the shower arm and drop ell are brass. We seal the opening with a moisture-resistant board and a waterproofing membrane where tile is going back.

FAQ

Shower Valve Replacement questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Shower Valve Replacement is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Can you replace just the cartridge?

Sometimes. If the body is sound and the replacement cartridge is still made, a cartridge is the smaller repair. If the body is pitted, cracked, or the stop is worn, a new cartridge will not fix it. We check the body before recommending one.

Will you have to cut the tile?

Only if there is no access from the back. Many showers back onto a closet or a hallway wall, and that opening is easier to repair than tile. If we do cut tile, we make the smallest opening that lets the valve out and set a remodel plate over it.

The handle is hot when I want cold. Is that the valve?

That is usually a cartridge that has failed or a valve body installed with the hot and cold reversed. We check the supply side first, because reversing the lines is a different repair than changing a cartridge. Both are fixable.

Do you need the water off for the whole house?

For a valve swap, yes, usually the main, because a shower valve has no local shutoff. We shut it at the main, drain the lines at a low fixture, and keep the work to the valve. If there is a stop for the bathroom, we use it.
