What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear out the cabinet and under the sink so there is room to work, and pull anything stored in front of the switch or the outlet the disposal plugs into. Note whether the dishwasher drains through the disposal or into its own trap, and whether the unit hums without turning. Have the new disposal on site with its flange and hardware if you bought it. The tech first confirms the switch controls the outlet and not something else, then measures the sink opening and the drain size, then turns the flywheel by hand to see whether the unit is jammed or the motor is dead.

The visit

The flange is seated and sealed, the knockout for the dishwasher is removed only if a dishwasher is connected, and the electrical is a switched plug or a hardwired whip with a disconnect you can reach. We run water and the dishwasher drain before we leave.

A humming disposal is a jammed flywheel or a dead motor. We free a jam first. Replacing a unit that only needed an Allen key is not the job.

Permit

Swapping a disposal for another one under the same sink normally needs no permit in New Jersey. A permit is normally not required for that. If a new switched outlet has to be installed, a circuit has to be extended, or the drain is being changed for the disposal, that is electrical or plumbing work that gets filed and inspected through the local construction office. The plumbing side of a straight swap is routine.

On the Shore

Damp air under a Shore sink attacks the disposal from the outside in. The motor housing and its vents rust, the terminals on the cord corrode, and the mounting ring and putty dry out and seep water onto the top of the motor, which is how a unit dies with a wet, tripped overload. A stainless grinding chamber and a sealed housing last far longer in that environment than a painted housing with an open frame. Keeping the cabinet dry protects the next unit too.

When we leave

The tech runs hot water through the disposal and through the dishwasher cycle, watching every joint under the sink with a dry paper towel and checking the flange from above. The flywheel gets spun by hand to confirm it turns freely, and the reset button is pressed to prove the circuit. Grinding a few ice cubes clears the chamber, and the tech checks that the drain from the dishwasher is not backing up into the sink before packing up.

Built with

The usual parts are a continuous-feed or batch-feed disposal sized to the sink and the drain, with a stainless grinding chamber and a sealed housing. The flange kit, mounting ring, and plumber's putty or gasket seal the sink opening, and a dishwasher tailpiece or connector ties the appliance drain in where it belongs. A corded plug or a hardwired whip matches what the existing switched supply allows. The trap is replaced when it is corroded.

FAQ

Garbage Disposals questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

What size do you install?

Matched to the sink and how you cook. A huge unit in a shallow bar sink does not fit, and we measure before we buy or before we open yours.

The disposal leaks at the top.

That is the flange and the plumber's putty, or the mounting ring. We reset it instead of caulking the outside of the sink.

Do you replace the trap too?

If it is a corroded metal trap or a dishwasher tailpiece that no longer lines up, yes.

A reset button that trips immediately?

We check for a jam and for water in the motor. If the motor is wet from a leak above, a new unit in the same puddle dies next week.

Can you add a disposal where there was none?

If there is a switched outlet or we can add one, and the drain can take it. An unswitched hot wire stuffed in the cabinet is not an install.

Do you haul the old one?

Yes. It is heavy and it drips. It does not stay in the bucket.

Do I need a bigger disposal for a big family?

Sizing follows the sink and how you cook, not the size of the household alone. A large unit will not fit under a shallow bar sink, and a small one chokes on peels. We measure the bowl depth and the drain first, then match the unit to what will actually fit and run.

My disposal hums but does not spin. Is it dead?

Not necessarily. A hum usually means the flywheel is jammed or the motor is seized, and freeing it with the right wrench often brings it back. If the motor is wet inside from a leak above, replacing it without fixing that leak wastes a unit.

Dishwasher drains into the disposal. Is that right?

It is common and it works when the knockout is removed and the drain has an air gap or a high loop. We check that the knockout is out and the hose is looped high, so dirty water cannot siphon back into the dishwasher.

Can the disposal drain into the same trap as the other basin?

It shares a trap with the sink most of the time, which is fine if the trap and tailpiece are sized and clear. If the other basin drains slowly now, adding a disposal can make that worse, so we check the drain before installing anything.
