Shingle Repair and Replacement

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the driveway side so a ladder can be set and walked around, and leave the attic hatch open. Have the age of the roof and any leftover shingles from the last job if they are still in the garage. The technician starts at the damaged course and checks three things before touching a tab: whether the courses above are still sealed down, whether the exposure line has crept, and what the sheathing looks like once the damaged shingle is lifted. Then the drip edge and the nearest penetration, because a missing tab at the eave and a leak at a pipe are not the same repair.

The visit

A shingle repair and replacement visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For shingle repair and replacement, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Replacing a few tabs or one slope is normally not a permit job in New Jersey. Towns generally want a permit when the whole covering is replaced, when sheathing is cut out or added, or when the roof structure changes, and those are the lines to ask about. For a patch, the inspection that matters is the one done on the deck while it is open. If the work grows into a full tear-off, the permit gets pulled before the first bundle comes off the truck.

On the Shore

At the Shore the sun and salt do the damage before the rain does. The adhesive strips that hold the tabs flat soften in the heat and let wind lift the corners, and the same salt air takes the galvanized nails, so a course can look intact while the fasteners have let go. That is why the deck and the fasteners matter more here than the shingle face. Where an eave sits in shade and stays damp, algae streaks follow and the deck edge softens first.

When we leave

Before leaving, the technician hoses the repaired area from the ground and checks the attic side for new staining or daylight, then runs a magnet over the grass and the driveway for nail heads. You get photos of the deck before it was closed and of the finished course. The sealant on the tabs needs a warm day or two to bond, so stay off that slope and keep ladders off it until then. The next hard rain is the real test.

Built with

Repairs use architectural asphalt shingles matched as closely as current stock allows, over a strip of synthetic underlayment. Nails are hot-dip galvanized or stainless rather than electro-galvanized, because the salt air takes the thin coating first. Ice-and-water membrane goes back at the eave and in the valleys, roofing cement seals the tab edges that get tucked, and aluminum drip edge replaces anything bent or rusted. Where the color no longer matches, the honest option is a whole plane rather than a patch.

FAQ

Shingle Repair and Replacement questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Shingle Repair and Replacement is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Can you match the shingles I already have?

Sometimes. Colors get discontinued and sun fades a roof within a few years, so a patch can read as a patch. The closest profile gets brought out, and you are told plainly whether it will blend or whether the slope is better recovered.

How many shingles can be replaced before it makes more sense to re-roof?

If the damage is in one area and the rest of the field is still sealed and pliable, a patch is right. Scattered failures, brittle tabs, or a deck that is soft in several places point to replacement instead.

Will you go up if it is raining?

Not while the roof is wet. Tabs will not seal and the deck cannot be judged wet, so the visit moves to the first dry window. An active leak gets a tarp in the meantime.

What causes the granules in my gutters?

Granule loss is normal wear, but a heavy accumulation means the shingle surface is near the end of its life. Once the mat shows through, that tab is done and the next wind takes it.
