What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the basement floor around the work area and move stored items off the slab. If you know the slab thickness or where the footing runs, tell us, because the cut has to miss it. Note whether the pit fills with clear water or with grit and small stone. The first three checks are the slab thickness and reinforcement, the pit depth against the pump's on and off points, and whether gravel is migrating in through the liner or a gap at the bottom.

The visit

A pump pit installation and repair visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For pump pit installation and repair, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Cutting a new pit into a basement slab is structural work on the floor, and some New Jersey towns want a permit and an inspection for it while others treat a small residential pit as ordinary repair. A liner replacement in an existing pit normally needs nothing. If the pit is new, or if a circuit has to be extended to reach it, we check with the town and pull the permit before cutting.

On the Shore

Concrete pits crack under freeze-thaw, and a cracked pit lets the surrounding stone migrate in, which clogs the pump and wears the impeller. Salt air corrodes the pump base and the switch linkage. High water tables near the Shore also mean the pit may never fully drain, so the liner and lid have to be set to handle water that keeps arriving. A sealed, gasketed lid keeps radon and moisture from rising into the room.

When we leave

We fill the pit until the float trips and watch the pump empty it, timing the cycle and confirming the switch resets. The check valve gets checked for drain-back, the lid is set so the wiring and piping clear the float, and the seams are sealed. Care note: keep the lid clear and do not park anything heavy on it, and check the discharge outlet outside so the pit is not fighting a blocked line.

Built with

The pit is lined with a perforated or solid corrugated plastic liner set in washed stone, with a lid that seals and screws down. Discharge is rigid PVC with a threaded check valve so it can be serviced from above. The float switch mounts on a separate rod or bracket clear of the piping. Stainless structural fasteners resist the pit environment.

FAQ

Pump Pit Installation and Repair questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Pump Pit Installation and Repair is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Will installing a pit make my basement floor wetter?

A properly lined and sealed pit collects water that was already moving under the slab and sends it outside. The floor stays drier because water has a place to go. An unsealed lid and a missing check valve are what cause mist and damp air.

Can you repair a cracked pit instead of replacing it?

Sometimes the liner can be patched or a sleeve installed if the crack is minor and the stone is not moving. If the pit is collapsing or gravel keeps entering, replacement is the honest answer because a patch will not hold a failing shell.

How deep should the pit be?

Deep enough that the float has full travel between its on and off points without hitting the pump base or the lid, and that is set by the pump and switch we are using. We measure before cutting instead of assuming a standard depth.

Does the pit need a sealed lid?

A sealed, gasketed lid keeps moisture, odors, and soil gas out of the room and stops anything from falling in. It also keeps a curious child or pet away from the water. We set it so the piping and wiring still clear the float.
