Paver Installation and Repair

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the patio or walk before the visit and take in furniture, grills, and pots. Flag the sprinkler heads and any low-voltage lighting, because the base gets opened up and those lines run shallow. The technician checks three things first: how deep the base is and whether the gravel was compacted in lifts, whether the edge restraint is actually pinned and holding, and how the surface drains, using a level to see whether it falls away from the house or ponds in the middle.

The visit

A paver installation and repair visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For paver installation and repair, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Re-laying an existing paver patio or walk is repair, and it normally does not require a permit in New Jersey. A brand-new hard surface can run into a town's limit on impervious cover, which is a zoning matter rather than a building inspection, and any work inside a town or county right-of-way needs its own right-of-way permit. When the job is a reset of what is already there, a permit is generally not part of it.

On the Shore

Pavers fail at the base, not at the surface. Freeze-thaw lifts the sand bedding, water sitting under the edge washes the base out, and the pavers settle into the void. Salt and de-icing chemicals work on the surface, and the damp coastal air keeps joints and shaded areas wet long enough for weeds and efflorescence. That is why a repair opens the base instead of just topping the joints, and why a draining base detail matters more here than inland.

When we leave

When the repair is closed, the technician sets a level on the surface to check the slope, then runs water across it and watches for ponding and for where the water leaves the edge. The joints get swept with sand and compacted, and the sand is misted so it sets. The care note is simple: stay off the surface until the joints have set, and expect to top up a little joint sand after the first hard rain.

Built with

The base is dense-graded crushed stone, usually four to six inches compacted in lifts, with an inch of bedding sand screeded on top. Edge restraint is a pinned plastic or concrete edge, because without it the field spreads. A geotextile fabric goes between the soil and the stone so fines do not pump up into the bedding. Joints are filled with polymeric sand, which firms up and resists washout and weeds better than plain sand.

FAQ

Paver Installation and Repair questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Paver Installation and Repair is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Can you just re-level the sunken spot?

A spot that sank means the base under it moved, so lifting the pavers and re-compacting the stone is the fix. Adding sand under the low pavers without addressing the base buys a season at most. The low area gets opened and rebuilt.

Will the replacement pavers match the ones we have?

Color and size runs change over the years, and existing pavers fade with sun and weather. A close match is usually possible, and resetting the original pavers back into the least visible part of the field helps. You will see the difference before anything is laid.

Why do we keep getting weeds in the joints?

Weeds grow where there is open sand, standing moisture, or a base that has settled and opened the joints. Cleaning out the old sand and refilling with polymeric sand helps, but a base that is still moving will keep opening up and letting them back in.

Does the sand in the joints need to be redone?

Joint sand washes out over time, especially on a walk that gets swept and rained on. It can be topped up as maintenance. If the joints are wide and the sand will not stay, the pavers have spread and the edge restraint needs to be looked at.
