What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the ground at the wall and move anything the dust will reach, and do not power-wash the wall before the visit, because the efflorescence and the spalled faces are the evidence. Note where water runs off the roof and whether the grade slopes toward the wall. The technician sounds the joints with a hammer for hollow mortar, scratches a joint to judge how soft the original mix is, and checks the units for face spalling and hairline cracks. Water gets looked at before mortar.

The visit

A brick and block repair visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For brick and block repair, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Repointing and replacing a few brick or block units is not a permit job in New Jersey in most cases. A permit generally applies when a wall is rebuilt, when a lintel or another structural element is replaced, or when the work changes the height or the openings. Tuckpointing and unit replacement are maintenance. If a crack runs through the units rather than the joints, have the cause looked at before any mortar goes in, because that is movement, not cosmetics.

On the Shore

Brick at the Shore fails from water and salt together. The face takes spray, the masonry holds it, and when the wall dries the salt crystallizes just under the surface and pops the face off. That is the spalling you see, and freeze-thaw finishes what the salt started by opening the joints. The mortar matters here: a hard mix is stronger than the brick and forces the brick to fail instead of the joint. Soft lime mortar that moves with the wall suits older Shore masonry.

When we leave

The wall is left to cure rather than sealed right away. The technician checks the new joints for fullness and tooling once they set, confirms the units sit flush with the wall plane, and looks at how water sheds at the top and base. Weep holes are cleared and left open. The care note: keep new mortar damp for a few days in hot weather so it cures instead of drying, and do not seal the wall for a season so it can dry out.

Built with

Repointing uses mortar mixed to match the existing wall in strength and color: lime putty and sand for older soft brick, a preblended mortar for newer work, never a straight cement mix on soft units. Replacement brick or block matches the size and absorption of what came out. Weep holes get open-celled rope or plastic vents, not mortar. A breathable siloxane sealer, if any, goes on last, since a film-forming sealer traps moisture and makes spalling worse.

FAQ

Brick and Block Repair questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Brick and Block Repair is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Why is the face of my brick peeling off?

That is spalling, and it is water and salt working under the surface. The face pops when the wall dries. The repair is the unit plus the water source, not paint over the top.

Can you just repoint over the old mortar?

No. Loose mortar has to be cut back to sound material before new mortar can key in. Smearing a joint over the top is the repair that fails in one freeze.

Should I seal my brick wall?

Only with a breathable sealer, and only after the wall is dry and the water source is fixed. A film-forming sealer on a damp wall traps the moisture that causes spalling.

A crack runs through the bricks, not the joints. Is that serious?

It can be. Cracks through the units usually mean movement rather than shrinkage, and repointing will not hold them. The cause gets looked at before any mortar goes in.
