Drywall Repair and Patching

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Clear the room and move anything hanging on the wall, because dust travels further than people expect. Say whether the wall is painted flat or with a sheen, since a shiny finish shows a patch more, and whether the wall is drywall or old plaster. The technician checks the thickness of the existing board, checks what framing sits behind the opening for a backer, and checks the wall with a moisture meter, because a patch over a damp wall will fail.

The visit

A drywall repair and patching visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For drywall repair and patching, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Patching drywall is cosmetic repair and does not require a permit in New Jersey. The permit question only comes up when the scope includes a new wall, a structural change, or an assembly that has to keep its fire rating, such as a garage ceiling under a living space. A hole in a bedroom wall is repair, and it gets treated that way.

On the Shore

The coastal humidity slows how fast joint compound dries, so coats take longer and a patch rushed in damp weather can shrink or crack weeks later. Damp air and salt also mean a wall can hold moisture without showing it, which is why the patch gets checked with a meter before it is closed. Priming the repair matters here more than inland: an unsealed patch pulls paint differently and flashes, especially on a wall with any sheen.

When we leave

The technician holds a light flat against the wall and rakes it across the patch to find ridges or a hollow, then checks it by hand. The repair is feathered well past the opening, primed, and the texture blended into the surrounding wall. The care note: it has to be primed before paint, the paint may need a second coat to match, and the area gets wiped down for dust before the room is used again.

Built with

Board is matched to the existing thickness, usually half inch or five eighths, and cut to land on framing so the edges are supported. The first coat is often a setting-type compound because it hardens by chemical reaction and does not shrink like the drying type, with lightweight compound for the finish coats. Paper tape goes on flat seams, corner bead on outside corners, and a primer-sealer over the patch before paint.

FAQ

Drywall Repair and Patching questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Drywall Repair and Patching is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Will we be able to see the patch after it is painted?

A patched and primed wall usually disappears under paint in normal light, especially with a flat finish. Two things can still show it: a patch that was not feathered far enough, and paint with a sheen. Raking light across the wall is the honest test.

Do you match the texture on the wall?

Yes. The texture is matched to what is there, whether that is orange peel, knockdown, or a smooth finish. The pattern gets compared against the surrounding wall and blended past the repair instead of stopping at a hard edge that would show later.

How dusty does this get?

Sanding makes fine dust, and it settles on surfaces well past the room. Floor covering and plastic go down before the work starts, and the area is wiped and vacuumed at the end. Closing doors and keeping the air handler off during sanding helps.

Can you patch a spot where the paper is torn?

Yes. Loose paper gets cut back to where it is still bonded, the area is primed or sealed, and a patch or a skim coat goes over it. Mudding over the fuzzy surface is what makes a repair blister or show a ridge later.
