What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Walk the front of the house with us in mind and note which plants you want to keep, move, or replace. Clear toys, hoses, and tools out of the beds and off the walk, and unlock any gate we will use. The first three checks are the actual bed line against the lawn, the soil depth over the root flare, and how the walk, the mailbox post, and the siding meet the beds, because mulch piled over those edges causes as many problems as it hides.

The visit

A beds, edging, and curb appeal visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For beds, edging, and curb appeal, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Refreshing beds, edging, mulching, and small curb details normally requires no permit in New Jersey. It is landscaping on your own property. A permit or town paperwork appears only if the work changes grade toward a neighbor, adds impervious surface like a new walk or driveway apron, or touches the right-of-way at the curb or the sidewalk. We ask before adding anything permanent in that strip.

On the Shore

Salt spray burns the front plantings that face the water, so the first row of a bed dies back and leaves bare soil that mulches away. Wind strips dry mulch from open beds unless the edging holds it. Freeze-thaw lifts shallow edging every winter, and a steel or stone edge that is not set deep will heave and wander. Salt-tolerant plantings, deeper edging, and a mulch that knits together all last longer here.

When we leave

We firm the bed, dress the mulch to an even depth, and feather it so it does not touch the siding, the mailbox post, or the tree trunks. The walk is blown or rinsed clean and the edging is checked for a straight, unbroken line. Care note: keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the foundation and the trunks, and top it up lightly rather than in deep annual layers that smother roots.

Built with

Edging is steel or aluminum with deep spiked sections, or cut stone set on a compacted base, selected over thin plastic that heaves. Mulch is shredded hardwood or a bark blend that knits together and resists wind, kept to a moderate depth. Bed soil is amended with compost where the existing soil is sandy, and mailbox posts are set in concrete below the frost line with treated or composite lumber and stainless fasteners.

FAQ

Beds, Edging, and Curb Appeal questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Beds, Edging, and Curb Appeal is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

How deep should mulch be?

A moderate layer is enough to hold moisture and suppress weeds, and deeper is not better. Piling it against the siding or the tree trunks traps moisture and invites rot and insects. We keep it pulled back and feather it thin at the edges.

Will steel edging heave in winter?

It can if it is set too shallow, which is why the spiked sections need to go deep and the base needs to be compacted. Set properly, it stays put. Thin plastic edging is the type that pops out every spring.

Can you save the plants I already have?

Usually, if they are healthy and suit the spot. We lift and reset what is in the way and bring the bed line back around them. Plants that are dead, overgrown, or wrong for a windy front may need to be replaced.

Does new mulch attract termites?

Mulch against the foundation holds moisture right where you do not want it, and that is more about water than about the mulch itself. Keeping a dry gap between the bed and the siding is the practical step. We leave that gap when we dress the beds.
