Gate Repair and Hardware

What to know before the visit.

Have ready

Open and close the gate a few times and note where it drags, and look at the post that holds the hinges. Move anything that blocks the swing, and trim back growth around the post. The first three checks are the hinge post, since a gate that sags is usually a post that moved rather than a hinge that failed; the fasteners, which often pull out of softened wood; and the latch, because a strike that has to be forced means the gate is out of square.

The visit

A gate repair and hardware visit starts by naming the failure, not by selling the fix. We check what the problem touched, protect the floors and the rooms below, and leave a written scope. The work is done in one sequence by the same company, so the trade that caused the damage is the trade that closes it.

What fails first on the Shore is what we look at: salt-rotted fasteners, water finding the soft spot, and the 'quick fix' that never dealt with the cause. For gate repair and hardware, the tell is usually visible on the first visit, and we say what it means in plain English.

Permit

Repairing a gate, resetting a post, or replacing hinges and latches normally does not require a permit in New Jersey. It is maintenance on an existing fence, not a new structure. A permit topic only comes up if the gate is part of a pool barrier, because those openings and latches are regulated for safety, or if the whole fence line is being replaced. We check the pool status first.

On the Shore

Salt air rusts hinges, cables, and latches from the inside out, so hardware that still looks solid can seize. Freeze-thaw moves the hinge post more than the rest of the fence, which is why gates go out of alignment every spring. Wet wood swells around the fasteners, so a lag screw that held last year may spin free this year. Hardware that drains and posts set below frost depth are what keep a gate working.

When we leave

We swing the gate through its full travel, check for binding and for a consistent gap at the latch, and set the strike so it catches without lifting the gate. Hinges are adjusted so the gate holds itself open where it should, and any exposed fasteners get touched up. Care note: watch the latch after the first freeze-thaw cycle, because a settling post shows up there first, and keep the swing clear of snow and ice.

Built with

Hinges are heavy-duty strap, T-hinge, or adjustable self-closing types in stainless or hot-dip galvanized steel, sized to the gate weight. Latches are gravity or thumb-latch style in the same finish, and where a gate must self-close, a spring or cable kit is used. Post repairs use treated lumber or a steel post anchor, and fasteners are stainless or coated exterior fasteners rather than plain steel.

FAQ

Gate Repair and Hardware questions

Have another question? Call (732) 333-7800 anytime.

How soon can we book this?

Call and we usually get an on-site look scheduled within a day or two, sooner for anything active. Gate Repair and Hardware is booked from the same Ocean Township base.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Saturday appointments are normal, and emergency repairs are answered 24/7.

Is this licensed work?

Licensed and insured, NJ HIC #13VH09886800. Where the town requires a permit, we pull it.

What if the job turns out bigger?

We stop and show you before we go any further, then quote the additional scope separately.

Will you clean up?

Floor protection, dust control, and haul-away are part of the visit, not an add-on.

Can you fix a sagging gate without replacing the post?

Sometimes, if the post is still solid and the hinges or their fasteners have simply loosened or moved. New longer fasteners or adjustable hinges can square the gate again. If the post is soft at grade, a hinge adjustment will not hold and the post needs attention.

Why does my gate drag only in summer?

Humidity swells wood, so a gate that closes fine in dry weather can bind when the air is damp. On the Shore that is most of the summer. Adjusting the gap and the latch to the wet condition keeps it working, rather than tuning it tight in dry weather.

Should I use stainless hardware at the Shore?

Stainless or hot-dip galvanized hardware lasts far longer in salt air than painted or plain steel. It matters most at hinges and latches, because those parts trap moisture. The difference shows up in a few seasons, not immediately.

How do I keep the gate from freezing shut?

Keep the swing clear of snow and ice, and make sure water drains away from the post rather than pooling at its base. Water that sits and refreezes is what locks a gate up. A latch with some clearance helps too, since a tight one ices closed.
